First time boarding your dog? It's natural to feel a bit anxious about leaving your furry friend in someone else's care. The good news is that with proper preparation, boarding can be a positive experience for both you and your dog.

Start with a Trial Day

At North Main Pet Lodge, we require all new dogs to complete a trial day before their first overnight stay. This gives your dog a chance to explore our facility, meet our staff, and get comfortable in a new environment without the stress of an overnight separation.

During the trial day, we'll observe how your dog interacts with our team and responds to the boarding environment. This helps us understand their personality, preferences, and any special needs they might have.

Prepare Your Dog at Home

Before your dog's first boarding experience, there are several things you can do at home to help them feel more comfortable:

  • Maintain their routine: Keep feeding times, walk schedules, and bedtime as consistent as possible leading up to the boarding stay.
  • Practice short separations: Gradually increase the time you spend away from your dog in the weeks before boarding.
  • Socialize your dog: If your dog isn't used to being around other dogs, arrange some playdates or visits to a dog park.
  • Stay calm and positive: Dogs pick up on your emotions. Stay upbeat during drop-off to help your dog feel confident.

What to Bring

Here's what you should pack for your dog's boarding stay:

  • Current vaccination records (required for first-time clients)
  • Enough food for the entire stay, plus a little extra
  • Any medications with clear administration instructions
  • A familiar blanket or toy that smells like home
  • Emergency contact information

Drop-Off Day Tips

When it's time to drop off your dog, keep goodbyes short and sweet. Prolonged, emotional farewells can increase your dog's anxiety. Give them a quick pat, a cheerful "see you soon," and trust that our experienced team will take excellent care of them.

Remember, we've been caring for dogs for over 30 years. We know how to help nervous pups settle in and feel at home. Most dogs adjust within a few hours and quickly fall into the boarding routine.
